Alex Griffin (born Alexander Thomas Griffin, 29 August 1971, Wall Heath, West Midlands) is an English musician and bass guitarist.
He attended Maidensbridge Primary School before going to Kingswinford Secondary school, following in the footsteps of this older brother Jeremy.
He is known for being the bass player and founder member of early 1990s indie punk band, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, who had four Top 40 hit singles and a Top 5 album Godfodder which sold over half a million copies in 1990. The band recorded a further two albums (Are You Normal? and Brainbloodvolume) before splitting up in 1995.[1]
Griffin's bass lines were instantly recognisable, as he played the bass guitar as if it were a lead instrument, similar to Peter Hook from New Order. The Neds have been quoted as being influential by bands such as Blink 182 and Muse.[2] After the band split in 1995, Griffin completed a degree and now lectures on the music business to students. Griffin also formed a computer based electronic music project called Tickle, mostly for his own enjoyment.
In 2000, Griffin partook in the Ned's Atomic Dustbin reunion, and continues to play occasional gigs with the band. In June 2006, they released their first single in eleven years, entitled "Hibernation".[3] On 12 May 2008, the band announced that the original line-up would be performing live together for the first time since 1995, on 6 December 2008 at the Astoria, London.[4] 2009 also saw them playing two shows with the original line-up.[5]
